Occupational Therapy has come a long way since its beginnings in the UK, with 2025 marking 100 years of the profession. As a second-year Occupational Therapy student at RGU, Katie had the privilege to meet with Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal as part of our Centenary event on campus. Here is a glimpse into her unforgettable experience.

My name is Katie Harley, and I am a second year Occupational Therapy student at Robert Gordon University. I was recently involved in the Margaret Barr Fulton Centenary event held within the University and had the pleasure of meeting with Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal to share my experiences and learning.

A collection of students from across all 4 stages were chosen to represent the Occupational Therapy course here at RGU. It was an amazing opportunity to be one of four second year students selected to attend the event and share my knowledge with Her Royal Highness.

Both the students and staff members were very excited for the Margaret Barr Fulton event and there was an unmistakable buzz around our clinical skills setting where the interactions took place.

ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY ABERDEEN

/>

I had the opportunity to speak with Her Royal Highness about my journey in university so far, my experiences on placement and the areas of occupational therapy which interest me most.

The Princess Royal and I discussed the importance of technology and the importance of making technology accessible for everyone who needs it. Technology is advancing in medicine every day and as more services are put online, more individuals become isolated due to the lack of resources or knowledge.

Her Royal Highness asked personalised questions to both me and the other students I was standing with and was incredibly knowledgeable on the subjects spoken about.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to meet Mrs Odeth Richardson who is Chair of Council at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, and we had a brief conversation about Occupational Therapy.

Her Royal Highness awarded the Margaret Barr Fulton award to Donna Morrison who graduated with a Master of Occupational Therapy degree from RGU in July. This award is nominated by the students themselves, aiming to highlight the student who contributed the most throughout the course.

The ceremony was held in the Sir Ian Wood Building’s atrium and had more than 100 spectators from both academic and care-based backgrounds. This advanced audience confirmed the importance of Margaret Barr Fulton’s work and the significance of her legacy which has been carried through the profession.

ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY ABERDEEN

Occupational therapy Margaret Barr Fulton centenary celebration visit by HRH Princess Royal

Picture of Princess Royal on a visit to the University to celebrate the centenary

Picture is free to use and issued on behalf of Robert Gordon University

” data-medium-file=”https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?fit=300%2C200&ssl=1″ data-large-file=”https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?fit=1024%2C683&ssl=1″ src=”https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&ssl=1″ alt=”” class=”wp-image-29442″ srcset=”https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=768%2C512&ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=2048%2C1365&ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/rgustudentblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/20250917_PRINCESS_RGU_082-1.jpg?resize=1200%2C800&ssl=1 1200w” sizes=”auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px” />

Margaret Barr Fulton was the first qualified Occupational Therapist to work in the United Kingdom. Margaret first started working as an Occupational Therapist at what is now known as the Royal Cornhill Hospital in 1925 until she retired in 1963.

100 years of Occupational Therapy is a significant milestone for all retired, practicing and future Occupational Therapists as this symbolises the growth, development and importance of the profession. Her Royal Highness is Patron of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy and acknowledges the importance of Occupational Therapy input and interventions.

A centenary tree has been planted in the RGU grounds which represents this growth and development. Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque commemorating her visit; this can be spotted alongside the centenary tree which was planted by the Occupational Therapy lecturers here at RGU.

Katie Harley

From Ireland to Aberdeen studying Occupational Therapy

Studying Diagnostic Radiography through personal challenges

The post Meeting The Princess Royal: Celebrating 100 Years of OT at RGU appeared first on RGU Student Blog.

[11
A Royal Encounter: My Experience at the Centenary Event
